Unemployment
If you are not teaching next semester, or the number of classes you normally teach has been reduced, you might be able to file for unemployment insurance through the State of Michigan. Even if you work elsewhere, you may still qualify for unemployment so long as your income has been reduced to a level recognized by the state as creating hardship. These are benefits that you have paid into every time you are employed and our unemployment insurance system is designed to help people going through situations like this.
It is possible for nontenure-track faculty to collect unemployment; however, the process can be difficult to navigate. Our local has been working with AFT Michigan and the Sugar Law Center for Social & Economic Justice to develop resources to help members:

to file a GRIEVANCE? Please fill out the AAFMCC ASSISTANCE FORM and an AAFMCC Officer will follow up with you. How do I check my Seniority?Seniority lists can only be accessed from a campus computer.
(AAFMCC also periodically sends out the seniority lists to all adjuncts via MCC email.) 1. Log in to My Macomb. 2. Click on "Staff" in the My Macomb Menu (in the top left corner). 3. Click on "Human Resources" and then "Human Resources Home." 4. Scroll down to the Quick Links section at the bottom of the page. 5. Select "Adjunct Faculty Roster of Candidates." 6. Find your department/campus and click on it. Each list contains all of the adjuncts who teach in your department and their seniority (the highest seniority being at the top of the list). It's good to know where you stand on the list as it helps you gauge your potential for getting classes. It's also good to know your standing in instances when you may be questioning if your class assignments do indeed reflect your seniority. SENIORITY LIST -- CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO & FAQS 4.16 MCC shall provide AAFMCC with an updated seniority list of all adjunct teachers on July 1 for use in scheduling the fall term, on November 15 for Winter term, and on March 15 for the Spring/Summer term. Disputes concerning the accuracy of the list shall be filed with the director of human resource management within twenty (20) calendar days of the publication of the list. |
